POWER SYSTEMS DEPARTMENT

The department is one of departments of the faculty of electrical engineering. It was created in December, 1976 after separation of the department of Power Stations, Networks and Systems. It trains bachelors, specialists (electrical engineers), masters with speciality in Power Systems and Networks and postgraduate students with specialities in Electric Machines and Apparatus; Power Stations, Networks and Systems; Electrotechnical Complexes.

The department is staffed by highly qualified specialists: 2 Professors, 5 Associate Professors, 2 Senior Lecturer and 5 Assistants. On the performed research works on actual subjects the staff of department successfully defended 14 dissertations, from them 12 candidate’s and 2 doctor's (Rogozin G.G., Zabolotny I.P.).

For students training the department uses two computer classrooms connected to the Internet, modern training simulators for formation of power systems control skills. Modern hardware allows the department to provide deep grounding on use of modern information technologies for power systems control. For learning efficiency increase the department uses modern technologies of training in the form of the automated training systems, business games and training simulators. The department provides training of engineers with profound level of English or French. Students carry out and defend theses in the corresponding language and receive certificates of a technical translator.

The department pays much attention to creative work of students. Annually together with teachers they publish more than 10 scientific papers. Many of their solutions are awarded high awards at the international student scientific competitions and conferences. Excellent graduates successfully continue training or working abroad.

The department has trained more than 1000 electrical engineers with speciality in Power Systems and Networks for the enterprises of CIS countries and more than 100 engineers for foreign countries. High level of engineers training is confirmed by responses of the enterprises, demands for trained specialists and successes of graduates in the industry. Two persons (Mnukhin A.G.And Kovalev A. P.) have defended doctor's thesis and more than 10 people have defended candidate's thesis.

Two faculty members of department Professor Grebchenko N. V. and Associate Professor. Larin A.M.are members of specialized council on defence of doctor’s theses and candidate's theses.

The department carries out research work and is ready to cooperate in the following areas:

  • Development of experimental methods of determination of sets of electromagnetic parameters and mathematical models of machines of alternating current; modeling of power systems operation.
  • Development of the automated workplaces of electrical engineers with speciality in power stations, power systems and networks for operational control of operating conditions.
  • Development of expert systems of condition monitoring of electric equipment of power stations and substations and operating conditions.
  • Problems of electromagnetic compatibility of power systems and consumers, ensuring quality of the electric power.
  • CAD of overhead transmission lines.
  • Development of systems of automatic compensation of line-to-ground currents in a network with the compensated neutral.

In the specified scientific areas over 400 scientific papers and claims on the innovation are published. Staff of the department regularly takes part in conferences.

The department carries out work on retraining of technical personnel of the power companies on the following areas:

  • Indicators of quality of the electric power and securing normalized indicators of quality.
  • Energy saving technologies.
  • Expert systems of diagnosis of equipment and manufacturing processes.
  • Methods of increase of profitability and reliability of operation of power units in unsteady conditions of electric networks, systems of industry power supply.
  • Modern information technologies of control.
